A KOCKA ÚJ ÉLETE / THE “CUBE’S” NEW LIFE
[ENG below] November hetedik napján adták át a Széchenyi István Egyetem Győri Tudományos
A város emblematikus ipartörténeti emléke, a „kockaépület” új
életre kelt. A dinamikusan fejlődő egyetemi innovációs ökoszisztéma bástyájává válhat,
ahol egyszerre ad teret a felsőoktatási és ipari együttműködéseknek, új kutatás-fejlesztési
projekteknek és innovatív ötletek megvalósításának.
– Büszkeséggel tölthet el mindannyiunkat, hogy Győr jelentős ipartörténeti emléke a város közepén mára megújult, s új funkciót kapott. Ezzel ismét a város gazdaságának fontos helyszínévé válhat az egyetem tudományos és innovációs parkj aként – mondta ünnepi beszédében dr. Filep Bálint, az Egyetem elnöke.
– Négy éve a modellváltással megkaptuk a lehetőséget intézményünk önálló, felelős irányítására, stratégiai együttműködésben a Széchenyi Egyetemért Alapítvány kuratóriumával. Közben, a nemzetközi példákat is figyelembe véve formálódott egyetemünk átalakuló szerepe. Ennek fontos eleme, hogy a vállalatok hozzá tudnak járulni a képzések, a kutatások fejlődéséhez és azok megújulásához. Mindezzel összhangban innovációs parkunk tovább erősíti az egyetem munkaerőpiaci hatását. Hozzájárul ahhoz is, hogy különösen a műszaki és informatikai pályára készülő fiatalok számára még több lehetőség legyen – a startup és spin-off vállalkozásoktól egészen a multinacionális vállalatokig – beilleszkedni a munkafolyamatokba. A park áttételesen a hazai kis- és középvállalati szektor, valamint a nagyvállalatok kapcsolódásának a helyszíne is.
dr. Filep Bálint, az Egyetem elnöke
A Széchenyi-egyetem mára a világ változásaira reagálni képes univerzitás lett. A szoros együttműködés a gazdasággal máig meghatározza a fejlődésünket.
Minden infrastrukturális fejlesztésünk segítette a nemzetközi nyitásunkat. A jelenlegi, 14 ezer fős hallgatói közösségünkből ezer a nemzetközi hallgató, akik a világ csaknem 80 országából érkeztek hozzánk.
- Alpolgármester voltam akkor, amikor a győri főiskola egyetemmé vált.
Kolossváry Tamás, a Győri Innovációs Park központvezetője közgazdász hallgatóként, frissdiplomásként évekig vezette az Arrabona Racing Team hallgatói versenycsapatot, jelenleg PhD doktorjelölt.
Kolossváry Tamás, a Győri Innovációs Park központvezetője
A következő ütem előkészítését, tervezését végezzük jelenleg is, vállalati partnereink intenzív érdeklődése mellett.
Elvárt továbbá a pénzben megjelenő gazdasági hatás is. Hiszen a külföldi hallgatók lesznek a legjobb nagyköveteinek, ráadásul általuk a mi gyerekeink és unokáink is jobban felkészülhetnek a nemzetközi versenyre.
Győr nekem a remény helye.
Hozzájárul a jövő generáció magas szintű, gyakorlatorientált képzéséhez.
Jelenleg az Audi Hungaria másfélszáznál is több szakértője vesz részt a győri egyetem oktatási tevékenységében, miközben éves szinten több százra tehető azon széchenyis gyakornokok száma, akik szakmai karrierjüket kezdik a vállalatnál, ahol egyébként a mérnökként dolgozó munkatársak több mint 50 százaléka a Széchenyi István Egyetemen végezte tanulmányait.
Mindezek az adatok is jól jelzik a felsőoktatási intézmény és a győri négykarikás cég példaértékű együttműködését, amelyet a két fél az ünnepség során új stratégiai megállapodás aláírásával emelt új szintre. A dokumentum kiterjed többek között a képzések gyakorlatorientált fejlesztésére, pályaorientációs felvételi előkészítő programok szervezésére, az Audi Hungaria Járműmérnöki Kar és az Audi Hungaria külső tanszék működtetésére, az oktatók számára indított ipari gyakorlati programokra, a magas színvonalú laborszolgáltatásokra, a legkorszerűbb technológiákhoz és a fenntarthatósághoz kapcsolódó közös kutatás-fejlesztési és innovációs projektekre is.
OUR UNIVERSITY’S SCIENCE AND INNOVATION PARK HAS OPENED
On the seventh day of November, the Győr Science and Innovation Park of Széchenyi István University was inaugurated on the site of the former biscuit and wafer factory, less than half a kilometre from the central campus. The „cube building”, an emblematic industrial monument of the city, has been revived. It could become a bastion of the dynamically growing university ecosystem of innovation, providing a space for academic and industrial collaboration, new research and development projects and the implementation of innovative ideas.
– We should all be proud that a significant industrial monument in the centre of Győr has been renewed and given a new function. This way, it can once again become an important site for the city’s economy as the university’s science and innovation park – said Dr Filep Bálint in his inaugural speech.
- Four years ago, the model change gave us the opportunity to manage our institution independently and responsibly, in strategic cooperation with the Board of Trustees of the Széchenyi University Foundation. The Innovation Park is an emblematic building that transcends time. We would like to thank Palkovics László for his innovative support and encouragement from the very beginning all the way to the implementation process. The idea for the development started with a site inspection following a student competition. We saw this area as a solution to the further expansion of our university. At the same time, our university’s transformative role has been shaped by international examples. An important element of this is that companies can contribute to the development and renewal of education and research. In line with this, our innovation park will further strengthen the university’s impact on the labour market. It will also contribute to providing more opportunities for young people, especially those preparing for careers in engineering and technology, to integrate into the workplace, from start-ups and spin-offs to multinational companies. The park is also a point of contact between domestic small to medium sized enterprises and large companies.
Today, Széchenyi University has become an institution capable of responding to changes in the world. Our predecessor, the Transportation and Telecommunication Faculty of Technical Sciences, was created to meet the needs of the industry in 1968. Close cooperation with the economy has shaped our development to this day. The first buildings on the campus were completed in 1974, when the faculty had 1212 students. The first economists started their studies in 1992 and the first law students in 1995. In the nineties, we started courses in health sciences and music. Our institution was awarded university status in 2002, and since then we have far exceeded the targets set for us. In 2004 we established our first doctoral school, in 2008 the Audi Hungaria Internal Combustion Engine Department was founded, four years later our Automotive Research Centre, and in 2015 the Audi Hungaria Faculty of Automotive Engineering was established. In 2016, we created the Faculty of Health and Sport Sciences, and in 2017, the Faculty of Arts. In 2016, we were joined by the communities of the Mosonmagyaróvár and Apáczai faculties, which was also strongly supported by the government. In 2017, we opened new dormitory wings that are up to European standards.
All of our infrastructure developments have helped us become more open internationally. Of our current student community of 14,000, 1,000 are international students, coming from almost 80 countries around the world. In 2021, the now hugely popular courses in Industrial, Architectural and Graphic Design were launched. Last year, we opened our first university innovation building with educational and accommodation fascilities at the ZalaZone Proving Ground, which also encourages real corporate partnerships. This year, we inaugurated our Smart Fan Experimental Farm in Mosonmagyaróvár, where we can contribute to the development of agriculture by building on modern drone technology and precision farming. Today, not only a neighbourhood, but the whole city, has benefited from the investments we have made. Our innovation park will both serve the economic players in the region and strengthen competition in the area. We thank the Government of Hungary for its committed support for the development of our institution.
Dr. Dézsi Csaba András, Mayor of Győr, said in his speech: it is a fantastic feeling and a source of satisfaction for me that the concrete block that had hopelessly stood on the site of the closed biscuit factory can once again be used for knowledge and production. - I was vice mayor when the Győr Faculty became a university. We worked hard for it, we were proud of it. It was a very big thing, but now I think that the transformation that is taking place at the university is just as important, if not more so, and is a step forward for the life of the institution. I would ask you to continue to work together, for everyone to do the best they can, each according to their talent, knowledge and diligence. There is only one secret to the work, and that is you have to get down and do it. That is what we are doing here in Győr. The other thing I tell my students at the university is to do what you love and you will be happy. I would like to see as many happy people as possible in Győr.
First as an economics student, then later as a graduate, Kolossváry Tamás, the Head of Győr Innovation Park, led the university’s Arrabona Racing Team for many years. He is currently a PhD candidate.
– The first phase of the Győr Innovation Park, which is of regional importance, was completed with HUF 6.8 billion from the GINOP-2.3.1-20-2020-00005 project. Bearing the hallmarks of advanced industry, the modern, imposing building provides an environment for competence building and utilisation in cooperation with companies. We are located in the immediate vicinity of Győr city centre and the central campus of Széchenyi University, on the site of Koestlin, the former Győr Biscuit Factory.
The building is clad in an LED mesh, a unique architectural solution. But what happens inside the mesh? The first phase of the Science Park project covers 3,860 square metres, half of which is dedicated to educational functions, a third to R&D offices for companies and the remainder to professional workshops, events and lectures. In addition to the event space, the ground floor of the building will host the business development office of the National Association of Entrepreneurs and Employers, the office of the Green Traffic Cloud project developed by the university, the university foundation and the Humda Mobility Development Agency. On the next floor, we find Bosch Hungary’s Győr site, where the development of intelligent mobility products and services will be carried out in close cooperation with the competence centres and faculties of the university, following the jointly defined goals of the Science Park. On the second, third and fourth floors, the university’s Department of Design, the Design Campus Competence Centre, will be located, which will function as a teaching and creative space. This will create a new opportunity for the integration of industrial design aspects into the design of technical products through inhouse collaboration. On the top floor of the building we can find the portfolio of automotive and digital technology developments. It will be home to the Audi Hungaria base, an important symbol of the 30-year strategic partnership, where engineers and students will work together to develop the hardware and software functions of the vehicles of the future. It will also be the home of key digital and telecommunications technology players in our region, such as Huawei, Telekom, and Rotors and Cams, a leading developer of drone technology. The academic side of the joint competence development will be provided by colleagues from the Centre for Digital Development.
The currently undeveloped area behind the building will be the site of further development of the Győr Science Park. We are currently preparing and planning the next phase, with strong interest from our corporate partners.
Member of Parliament Simon Róbert Balázs invited the audience on a short journey through time.
– I remember the moment five years ago when I told someone on the phone that the decision had been made that the previously privately owned former biscuit factory site would be bought by the Hungarian government and given to Széchenyi University to create a technology and innovation park. This was the first step, clearly initiated by the university itself. After all, the area where the central campus is located is already practically physically full. It was essential to expand and, following the example of the West, to create a science park. Looking back over the past decade and a half, the history of the University of Győr can certainly be considered a golden age. But it looks like the next 15 years will be one too. Just think of this development, of which today is only the end of the first phase. the second phase will follow by 2025 and the third phase by 2030. And we must not forget that this modern and impressive building, which is to be inaugurated today, must also be filled with content. This is where the university’s knowledge and the role of the companies that will be housed here come in. Their cooperation will strengthen Hungary’s economy.
The Hungarian government was represented at the ceremony by Csák János, Minister of Culture and Innovation, who said that Győr has always been one of Hungary’s leading cities, not least because of its location. - Of course, location alone means nothing, because everything is decided in the head. This is why the government has approved and set up the new John von Neumann Programme, which aims to help link universities with research centres, companies and the financial world.
- An important element of the strategy is to achieve impact, which we consider important in three ways. One, of course, is intellectual impact, that is, studies and publications - in international cooperation, of course. In this, Széchenyi University is making very good progress. An economic impact in monetary terms is also expected. The Hungarian Government spends around HUF 300 billion a year on innovation, but if this spending does not have an impact, if, for example, this building does not produce intellectual products, publications or even patents that will then be the source of products and income, then we will not have the money to finance Hungarian culture and family policy. In addition to the intellectual and economic impact, we also need a social impact. As expected, the Széchenyi University has already become an integral part of the city of Győr, and at the same time it has to create a vibrant and attractive world for young people to want to come here. In fact, I will go further. At the moment, the proportion of foreign students at the University of Győr is about 7%, and I consider them to be a value-creating element. After all, foreign students will be our best ambassadors, and they will also prepare our children and grandchildren better for international competition. We must also ensure that our teaching staff includes more and more foreign members. In Győr, they see exactly the direction in which we need to develop, the need to increase the number of publications, patents and start-ups. Hungary’s goal is to be in the top 10 of the world’s 200 countries in terms of innovation by 2040, this means the top 5 percent.
In Hungary, the contribution of companies to added value is only 52%, compared to an EU average of 76%. This must be increased through higher education. I see Széchenyi István University as an example and an inspiration in this area, because it is young enough to be dynamic, but old enough to have traditions. In order to increase domestic added value, we have renewed the Hungarian Research Network, the National Research, Development and Innovation Office and Fund, and created the Research Excellence Council. I am striving to connect as many excellent Hungarian researchers as possible with as many foreign researchers as possible and to bring in projects - with a focus on digitalisation, the green transition and the health industry - where we Hungarians have a tradition, we have scientists and there is a great demand for them in the world. I would stress that neither in terms of attracting students, nor in terms of our ideas and products, should we focus on our market of ten million. We have a completely open market of 450 million people, the market of the European Union, where there is a complete free flow of capital and services, goods and labour.
Győr is not a rural town, but a centre between Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. For me, Győr is a place of hope. You are the hope of Hungary; you are the future elite.
In his speech, Alfons Dintner, Chairman of the Board of Audi Hungaria, described the cube building as an object of strength, in which the performance of the company with the four rings and research and development can be combined. – As well as celebrating the 30th anniversary of our company, this year marks another milestone in our scientific collaborations. Audi Hungaria’s success over the past three decades is the result of our expertise, our innovative thinking and our connection with our partners. Knowledge transfer between science and industry is essential for the transformation of the automotive industry, which is why we are delighted that the Győr Science and Innovation Park is creating an ecosystem that encourages innovation and research. It will contribute to the high-level, practice-oriented training of the next generation.
Currently, Audi Hungaria has more than 150 experts participating in the educational activities of the University of Győr, while the number of Széchenyi trainees starting their professional careers at the company, where more than 50 percent of the engineering staff graduated from Széchenyi István University, is estimated at several hundred per year. All of these figures are a good indication of the exemplary cooperation between this educational institution and Győr branch of the brand with the four rings, which the two parties raised to a new level by signing a new strategic agreement during the ceremony. The document covers, among other things, the practice-oriented development of training courses, the organisation of career-oriented admission preparation programmes, the operation of the Audi Hungaria Faculty of Automotive Engineering and the Audi Hungaria External Department, industrial internship programmes for educators, high-quality laboratory services, joint research, development and innovation projects related to state-of-the-art technologies and sustainability.
